They agreed that it would be good for him, and that it
was important for all the ‘teams’ to show their support for Ricky.
Two weeks later school was over and the first baseball practice was to
begin. Ricky and his dad showed up at practice right on time.
Jonathan, his dad, and the rest of the team cheered when they saw Ricky.
As Jonathan walked over to greet Ricky he noticed he had a seat belt on.
“Hey, man - this is cool.”
“Yeah, you wanna know what else is cool? Look at this kickstand my dad
rigged up on my chair. I can’t fall out or over.”
“Cool, really cool,” said Jonathan as he looked at Ricky’s dad in amazement.
Jonathan explained to the team how Ricky was going to participate. The
other boys nodded. “It could work.” said David.
The practice went better than Jonathan expected. “Keep practicing and
it will be fine.” he told everyone.
The big day finally arrived. Ricky kept telling Jonathan that he was
tense and nervous about the game.
“I don’t think I can do it, Jon, I’m kinda scared.”
“Don’t be, Ricky, you’re gonna be great,” said Jonathan.
The game started. Ricky and Jonathan’s team, the Pirates, were up to bat
first. Ricky was the fourth to bat, no score, and the bases were
loaded. Jonathan wheeled him to home plate and then put on a vest that
read “Ricky” with the number “1” below.
“Go for it,” said Jonathan.
