“Well that’s okay by me. I could use a
break. If you have any questions, knock on the living room window and
we’ll come out,” said his mom.
After they left, Paul hurried over to the shelf and
took his mother’s sign down. He turned it over and wrote: “Sold”. Then
he put it back onto the shelf and sighed with relief.
Well, I’ve rescued it for a while anyway, thought Paul.
Over the next hour many people stopped. The shelf was a real traffic
stopper. Three couples were disappointed to see that it was sold.
Paul felt like a hero. He was saving the shelf! He sat in the garage,
keeping his eyes on things, when he heard his dad push through the door.
He quietly jumped up and ran to the shelf to turn the sign around. He
looked around casually so as not to look guilty of trickery.
“Hi Dad,” said Paul. “Sold lots of things.”
“Great,” said dad. “I guess you make a pretty
good manager.”
“Yep”
“Any bids on the shelf?”
“Ah, ah, no,” said Paul. He stared at his feet.
“Well, I’ll be. I would have thought some bids on
it by now.”
“Maybe people don’t appreciate how valuable it is Dad,”
said Paul.
“Hm... maybe so,” said his dad.
