“Betty,” said his dad, “I think Paul is serious
about wanting your mother’s shelf. It’s too bad that we can’t hang onto it
for him.”
Paul’s heart skipped a beat.
“Now, Don, don’t you start working on me, too,” said
his mom. “I can’t live with this shelf any longer. It has too many
memories for me. I need to erase the past and start fresh.” Paul
heard a crack in her voice.
“It seems to me that you’re getting rid of everything
of your mother’s. I know she couldn’t throw anything out, but you’re
making up for her now.” said dad.
“Well, I have to do what I have to do,” said his Mom.
Paul sighed. No hope there!
The next morning at 8:30 a.m. people began arriving for
the garage sale. Dad and Paul set the furniture, including the shelf,
along the driveway to attract attention. Mother put a sign on the
shelf that read: “Taking offers”
Paul saw one elderly lady look at the shelf closely.
She asked his mother many questions about its history.
“Would you like to put an offer on it?” asked his
mother. Paul held his breath.
“Oh, I would love to, but I can’t begin to afford it.
I don’t know why you want to sell it,” said the lady. Paul’s mother
smiled and agreed that it was beautiful.
After a couple of anxious hours, Paul finally said,
“Mom, why don’t you and Dad take a break? I can run the sale by myself
for awhile.”
